How to maintain vacuum motors?

Vacuum motors are used in many applications that require the flow of air to be controlled. Vacuum motors have a variety of applications, from small fan motors to large industrial vacuum pumps. The following are some tips for maintaining these devices:

Keep it clean and dry. The motor’s windings must always be kept clean and dry. Dirt can accumulate in the motor and cause short circuits between the windings, which can lead to damage or failure of the device. Wipe off any dirt with a soft cloth before using it again.

What can you make with a vacuum motor?

1. Check for loose electrical connections or broken wires in the cord and replace them if necessary.

2. Check for a bad switch – remove the switch and check for continuity across each terminal (with the switch in the off position). If there is no continuity, replace the switch. If there is continuity, check for breaks in wire insulation near the terminals of the switch. Repair as needed and then test again.

3. Check the belt – if it is broken or loose, replace it with a new one of the same size and type (if you can’t get exactly what you need, use a smaller or larger belt). If possible, adjust tension on belt before installing by adjusting screws on motor shaft pulley (looks like a sprocket). Tension should be so that when motor is running under full load there is no slack in belt but not so tight that it will slip as soon as weight is removed from vacuum cleaner (this means you may have to loosen tension slightly when cleaning since some weight will be taken off unit when you lift dirt out of carpet).
